Manitou explains that material and spiritual civilizations carry equal holiness in the biblical vision. The problem of Cain and Abel is the division of work without brotherly love — Cain works the land for both, Abel wins the sky for both. He links this to Isaac's sons: by natural order Esau should have inherited priesthood and Jacob the material world, but things evolved differently.
