Jacob chose the spiritual task while Esau chose the physical world, but their roles were meant to complement each other. Esau, plunging into nature, becomes deprived of hope — tired of living. Jacob, though focused on Torah, is also able to mend what was Esau's task. The 'red lentil soup' symbolizes how material vitality rejuvenates tired civilizations. When Jacob offers to take on Esau's work alongside his own, the birthright exchange becomes legitimate and regular.
