Manitou teaches that the Torah scholar who lives in poverty is completely intellectual and free from materialism. He should not accept gifts if he can survive without them, so as not to lose his spiritual level. This connects to Bezalel who was called Hoshev Mahashavot (thinker of thoughts) - he could direct the intention of each donor's gift to its proper sacred purpose in the Mishkan.
